Programme Overview

The Associate Degree in Midwifery programme prepares students to provide a continuum of midwifery care from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and childbirth through the postnatal period, newborn care and reproductive health. Learning emphasizes normal care, early recognition of risks and complications, initial response and safe referral.

Programme Structure by Academic Year

Each academic year comprises two semesters. Learning progresses from normal midwifery care to complex care and advanced professional competencies.

Year 1: Normal Midwifery Care

Semesters 1 and 2

Foundational sciences, normal antenatal care, normal childbirth, postnatal care, newborn care and reproductive health.

Year 2: Complex Midwifery Care

Semesters 1 and 2

Complications of pregnancy, childbirth, the postnatal period and newborn care; pharmacology, counselling, emergency response and referral.

Year 3: Advanced Midwifery Care

Semesters 1 and 2

Advanced maternal and newborn care, perinatal mental health, evidence-based practice, leadership, service quality and community health.
